How To Care For Your Freshly Laid Turf

Congratulations on your newly laid turf! You’ve made a significant investment in enhancing the beauty of your outdoor space. However, to ensure your turf thrives and transforms into a lush, green carpet, proper care is essential.

    Watering

Watering is crucial during the initial establishment phase of your turf. For the first two weeks after installation, ensure that your turf remains consistently moist. Water lightly but frequently, aiming to keep the soil beneath the turf damp. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to issues such as root rot and fungal diseases.

    Timing

Water your turf early in the morning or mid afternoon to minimise evaporation and maximize absorption. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as this can lead to water loss through evaporation and stress on the turf. Avoid watering within a couple of hours of sunset, as this will cause your turf to remain wet overnight, which will create the ideal environment for fungal diseases.

    Monitoring

Keep a close eye on your newly laid turf to ensure it is receiving adequate moisture. Check for signs of wilting or browning, which indicate that the turf may need more water. Conversely, be cautious of excessive moisture, which can lead to issues such as root suffocation and disease.

    Mowing

While it may be tempting to mow your new turf right away to achieve a manicured look, it’s important to allow it to establish before mowing. Wait until the turf has rooted firmly into the soil, which typically takes around 2-3 weeks. When you do mow, set your mower blades to a height of around 5 – 7cm to avoid stressing the turf.

    Fertilising

When you turf was laid, the underlay should have already had a starter fertiliser in it, providing the right nutrients for your turf until the first mow. After the first mow, consider applying a slow-release, balanced fertilizer to provide essential nutrients for healthy turf growth. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth and thatch buildup.

    Weed Control

Keep an eye out for weeds that may invade your newly laid turf. Hand-pull any weeds that appear, taking care to remove the entire root system to prevent regrowth. Consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed seeds from germinating. See our Keeping Lawns Weed & Bindii Free article for some product suggestions.

    Foot Traffic

Ensure there is no foot traffic on your newly laid turf during the first 6 weeks prevent damage to delicate root systems. Avoid heavy activities such as sports or entertaining until the turf has fully rooted and established.

    Pets

During the first six weeks after laying turf, it’s crucial to restrict pets from accessing the newly laid area. While your furry companions may be eager to explore the fresh turf, allowing them onto the lawn too soon can result in damage to the delicate root system. Pets’ paws can compact the soil and disrupt the turf’s establishment process, leading to uneven growth and patchy areas.

Additionally, pet urine can cause unsightly brown spots on the turf, as the concentrated nitrogen content can burn the grass blades and stunt growth. By enforcing a strict no-pet policy for the first six weeks, you give your turf the best chance to establish strong, healthy roots and achieve a vibrant green appearance.

After this initial period, gradually reintroduce your pets to the lawn while remaining vigilant to prevent any damage. Your patience and diligence will be rewarded with a thriving, pet-friendly lawn that both you and your furry friends can enjoy.

Caring for freshly laid turf is essential for ensuring its long-term health and vitality. By following these tips, you can help your turf establish quickly and thrive in its new environment. With patience and proper care, you’ll soon be enjoying a beautiful, lush lawn that enhances the beauty of your outdoor space.
